The 2028 Chrysler Airflow: A New Direction for the Brand
The Chrysler Airflow, once a sleek electric crossover concept unveiled at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), has undergone a dramatic transformation. Initially expected to be Chrysler's first major electric vehicle for North America, the Airflow program has evolved into something very different, reflecting a shift in customer feedback and brand strategy.
A Shift in Direction
The original Airflow concept, designed under the C6X (CA) codename, was set to utilize the STLA Large architecture, similar to the Dodge Charger and Jeep Wagoneer S. However, former Chrysler CEO Chris Feuell wanted a new direction for the brand, and customer feedback played a pivotal role. The Airflow concept, while impressive, was deemed too edgy for the market, and the program was suspended.
Investor Day Revelations
At Stellantis Investor Day 2026, the new direction became clear. Chrysler is now focusing on a more mainstream, practical, and affordable platform, the STLA One. This platform supports gasoline, hybrid, and electric powertrains, offering flexibility and catering to a wider audience.
A Different Airflow
The upcoming Airflow crossover will be a far cry from the original concept. It will be lower, wider, and more practical, with a focus on interior room comparable to the Toyota RAV4. The design will blend practicality with a premium appearance, featuring slim horizontal LED lighting and vertical lighting signatures.
Hybrid Powerhouse
Chrysler's decision to prioritize hybrid and efficient gasoline powertrains aligns with market demand. The Airflow is expected to offer Stellantis' turbocharged 1.6-liter EP6 hybrid system, producing 210 horsepower and 230 lb.-ft. of torque, and the new 2.0-liter Hurricane4 engine, which introduces Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) technology.
Timing and Production
While production details remain unclear, the Airflow is set to debut as a 2028 model-year vehicle, likely in late 2027. If successful, it could provide Chrysler with a much-needed mainstream utility vehicle lineup, offering practicality, affordability, and hybrid efficiency.
In my opinion, the 2028 Chrysler Airflow represents a strategic shift towards a more accessible and practical brand image. By embracing hybrid technology and a more mainstream design, Chrysler may finally find its place in the competitive North American market.
